A joint Canada-US enterprise, the St. Lawrence Seaway is a system of canals and locks linking the Great Lakes and the St. Lawrence River with the Atlantic Ocean. The Seaway, a huge engineering accomplishment, was officially opened April 20, 1959 and continues to be a major shipping route for world trade.
